Hilda's Essentials
Everything the UK government recommends for a home emergency kit, in one box. No shopping list, no guesswork, no evening lost to research.
What's inside
Battery torch — torches are safer than candles, and it's the first thing you'll reach for when the lights go.
Power bank — for charging your phone when there's no mains power.
Battery radio — for official updates during a power cut, when the wi-fi is down and you're rationing your phone.
Spare batteries — for the torch and radio, because flat ones are the usual reason a kit fails.
First aid kit — waterproof plasters, bandages, a thermometer, antiseptic, eyewash solution, sterile dressings and gloves, medical tape and tweezers.
Hand sanitiser and wet wipes — for keeping clean when the water is off.
The Hilda box — everything in one place, so you're not hunting through drawers in the dark.
What we haven't packed
Your medication. We can't know what you take or how much, and a spare supply has to come from your own pharmacy. Speak to them about whether keeping a small buffer is possible for your prescription.
Your documents. Copies of passports, insurance details, tenancy or mortgage papers.
Food and water. Water is heavy to post and free from your tap, and food needs replacing every few years, so we'd rather you kept both in the cupboard. The official guidance suggests around three litres of drinking water per person per day.
Everything else, we've got covered.
Small enough for the hall cupboard. Smart enough that you won't want to hide it away.
